This tiny widget checks your Address Book for people with an upcoming birthday or for people with a birthday that just happenend. Click on their name to start writing your own personal Happy Birthday email to them. With this widget on your Dashboard, you’ll never miss a birthday again.

As usual, here are the standard Apple installation instructions:

When the widget download is complete, show Dashboard, click the Plus sign to display the Widget Bar and click the widget’s icon in the Widget Bar to open it. If you’re using a browser other than Safari, click the download link. When the widget download is complete, unarchive it and place it in /Library/Widgets/ in your home folder. show Dashboard, click the Plus sign to display the Widget Bar and click the widget’s icon in the Widget Bar to open it.

  2. Love this little widget, but would be great to have the option to turn off passed birthdays or set them for a different range of notification. (1 month ahead, 1 week past, etc)

  3. I like this widget very much and would like to suggest the following enhancements:

    1. German localisation ( I could do the translation )
    2. Make the widget sizeable

  4. This is a very nice one to stick into the dashboard.

Uhm, could it be that it fails to updates itself?
I keep logged in for weeks…

  5. Does this check the mac address book, Office book, or am I just not seeing where to input birthdays. Do I need to update the iLife suite to the latest version?

  6. love the widget. I’ve needed this for years now….
I would love it even more if it was sizeable. too small as it is for us with weaker eyes….
    thanx again!!
    PEACE

How do you input birthdays? I wrote something in the “note” part of my address book for someone……but it doesn’t come up in the widget. How is one supposed to make this work:? Anyone?

  8. In the Mac Address Book (in Tiger anyway), go to the Card menu, find the Add Field sub-menu, and then select Birthday to add a birthday field to the current card. Or go to Template in the preferences where you can add the Birthday field to the template for all cards. Type the date in whatever format and Address Book reformats it for you.

    p.s. Awesome widget!

  9. Very helpful to my social skills. Thanks!

    A couple of issues:

    1) The time delta does not always reflect correctly. Examples are; a birthday that was yesterday shows up in the widget as tomorrow, a birthday from 5 days ago shows up as 4 days ago.

    2) Todays birthdays sometimes show up as tomorrow

    3) There is a realtionship between noon local time and the computations presented. If I do a Command-R before noon while seeing the above issues, I get the same results. If I do a Command-R at noon or after, the data corrects and shows the info as expected.

I am running 10.4.2 and my time zone is set to Eastern US

  10. I’m having the same issue as Andy reports as part of #1: Yesterday’s birthdays show up as if they were tomorrow.

I haven’t checked the other bugs, but I’m guessing it all has to do with UpdateBirthdays.getUpcomingBirthdays(birthdayRange) – I see no bugs in the javascript after that procedure call, and no other source for data before it.

While I’m here, I may as well put in a plug for allowing different ranges for past and future listings. I don’t need to see birthdays from last week, but I’d like to see them coming up next week.

Otherwise, a wonderful widget! I’ve already gotten an “I can’t believe you remembered my birthday” email from an old friend.

Is there any chance of the source code for the plugin being released?

    Thanks,
    Gavin

  11. Very cooooool! I was looking for such a Widget since the release of Tiger. Thank you very much!

It would turn to super cooooooool with the following enhancements:
    - resizable window
    - different (free) ranges for ahead/past
    - a slightly bigger font
    - add the day of week for the next 6 days, or the date for the rest:
‘in 3 days (Thursday) Fred will turn 25′
‘in 12 days (27.08.05) Monica will turn 22′
(date format choosable mm/dd/yy or dd.mm.yy)

If you need help for a german localization just let me know…
