Joel’s cool (but geeky) Excel bug explanation

There’s been ramblings lately on various tech blogs about a multiplication bug in the new version of Excel. Basically, Excel says that 850*77.1 has a value of 100,000 when it should be 65,535.

Now I love a good Microsoft-is-for-super-dweebs posting as much as the next guy, but Joel Spolsky posted a very impressive explanation of the bug, and after reading that, it makes sense.

So Microsoft, in my book you’re off the hook on this one. Please defer this Excel bug so you can focus all of your resources on the more important task at hand –getting rid of Windows Vista.
